WHEREAS, ensuring the availability of quality, safe, and effective medicines to the public is a fundamental issue of public health and safety;
WHEREAS, the African Union adopted the Treaty for the Establishment of the African Medicines Agency (AMA) on 4th February 2021 during the regular session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government, for the purpose of strengthening regulatory capacity, improving access to quality-assured medicines, and protecting public health across the continent;
WHEREAS, the Agency shall coordinate regulatory efforts among Member States to address substandard and falsified medical products, particularly in those countries where national regulatory capacity is limited;
WHEREAS, the ratification of this Treaty would contribute positively to Ethiopia’s efforts in controlling pharmaceutical products and enhance the country’s cooperation in regional health initiatives;
WHEREAS, the House of Peoples’ Representatives of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia deliberated and ratified the Treaty at its session held on the 29th day of November 2023;
NOW, THEREFORE, in accordance with Article 55(1) and (12) of the Constitution of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, it is hereby proclaimed as follows.
