Awel Sultan has been leading the National Human Rights Monitoring Directorate, formerly known as the National Human Rights Action Plan Office, since late 2023. Under his leadership, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has initiated the development of the National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights and diligently worked on developing a comprehensive Human Rights Monitoring Manual. Awel has also contributed to the preparation of state reports and engaged in constructive dialogues under the United Nations Human Rights mechanisms.
His tenure has seen significant efforts to improve the treatment of prisoners and detainees through organized visits to prisons and detention centers. Additionally, he has been instrumental in coordinating the implementation of FDRE Transitional Justice Policy.
Prior to his current role, Awel served as the Director of Public Relations and Communication, Team Leader of Awareness Raising, Training, and Education, and as a prosecutor at both regional and federal levels. He has held various roles, including Junior Prosecutor, Senior Prosecutor, and Deputy Assistant Attorney General. During his previous tenure, Awel inaugurated the Justice Museum at the Ministry of Justice and spearheaded the rebranding of the ministry.
